The Book That’s Still Shaping My Youth Ministry — 20 Years Later

Posted on Sep 2, 2025

When I was in college, one of my classes required me to buy a book called Teamwork & Teamplay by Jim Cain. At the time, it was just another textbook I needed for class. But I found myself going back to it again and again as a resource. I used it when I was a camp counselor, I used it when I was a nature interpreter, I used it at a church council/boards of elder retreat. Over 20 years later, that same book still has a place on my bookshelf, and more importantly, in my ministry toolbox.

Why? Because it’s packed with simple, creative, and incredibly effective games and activities that teach cooperation, communication, and teamwork. The best part? They’re so much fun that participants don’t even realize they’re learning!

Timeless Tools for Today’s Youth

These activities from Teamwork & Teamplay work with youth or adults and are perfect for retreats, lock-ins, youth group nights, or even quick icebreakers.

One of my absolute favorite tools that I first discovered through this book is the lycra tube. If you’ve never seen one, picture a giant loop of stretchy fabric. Here’s a link to see what a lycra tube looks like. It’s simple, but the possibilities are endless. A group can:

  • Sit back in it as a shared “chair” while debriefing an activity
  • Stand in it and bounce off the sides like a slingshot
  • Use it for cooperative games that spark laughter, build trust, and create connection

I love lycra tube activities so much that we even gave one away as a prize during Virtual Quake a few years ago! If you’ve never seen one, I’ll include a link below so that you can see what a lcyra tube looks like.

Why This Matters for Your Ministry

Youth today are craving connection. They need spaces where they can build trust, learn to communicate, and feel part of a team. Hands-on activities like these make that possible. They break down barriers, open the door for deeper conversations, and help create a sense of belonging.

If you’re looking for ways to make your youth group time more meaningful (and a whole lot of fun), I can’t recommend Teamwork & Teamplay enough. And if you’re curious about how to use a lycra tube, here’s a PDF with more creative ideas.
